Find the common commands
- Right-click the file or folder you want to work with. On a touch screen, press and hold.
- Look for Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Share, and Delete. Hover over an icon to read its label; placement and labels vary by build.
- For Copy and Paste, you can also use Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V after selecting the file.
Open the fuller menu
If a familiar command from an installed app is not in the shorter menu, select Show more options. Supported legacy shell commands can appear there.
A command can also be missing because its app is not installed, does not support that file type, or needs an update. “Show more options” is useful, but it cannot restore every removed or unsupported feature.
Do not confuse copy, move, and delete
Copy makes another copy when you paste. Cut prepares a move when you paste. Delete removes the selected item, subject to the destination and deletion method.
If you are unsure, cancel the menu and check the selected filename first. Practice with a spare test file rather than your only copy of something important.
When the menu itself misbehaves
Test another file or folder. If only one app’s command fails, note that app and its version. If File Explorer repeatedly freezes, save work and investigate the actual error instead of assuming the new menu design is the cause.
